I love a book that follows thru with its intentions of creeping out the reader because that's how I felt when I read Jim Martin's ("Martin) "A Madman's Song." A well-written and chilling novel of pure evil that surfaces when a 9 year-old boy and his mother move into their new home; having no knowledge of what took place in their home fifty years ago. This is a real page-turner; the story so engaging and the characters so colourful and amiable. Martin succeeds, where others have failed, with his descriptive and creepy imageries that some of the residents of Millford Springs are experiencing. Kudos to Martin's debut novel as it's an engaging and suspenseful-thriller. It also incorporates some hilarity and romance; keeping it to a minimum so as not to overshadow the central theme which continuously pulls you in. I look forward to reading more of his books.

A Madman Song Jim Martin 9780615690155 Books Reviews

I have to admit that with 2 jobs my reading time has been relegated to a couple pages at night until I pass out and drop the phone on my face. But when I started reading A Madman's Song it had me hooked. I stayed up way past my bedtime a couple nights. I even found myself reading on lunch breaks and sitting at home, like the good old days. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast pace, heart pounding read. And I'll be reading more by Jim Martin soon.
Jim Martin's prose captured my interest immediately. The detail and imagery he brought to life was second only to to the tale he weaved. His writing makes it so easy to fall in love with the characters and form a friendship with them. It is obvious that extreme care was taken with his story and its protagonists and antagonists alike.

Only certain books will keep me up until the wee hours of dawn. This was definitely one of them. I highly recommend "A Madman's Song" to anyone who loves a great thriller with heart. It will not disappoint.
I virtually devoured this book. It is well written, a good storyline, and highly imaginative. This is an author who knows how to grab a reader and hold on to their attention without letting go at any point to the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed this rollercoaster ride, and will gladly take another one with author Jim Martin's name on it. I'll keep this short so you can jump on without much further waiting in line. BUY THIS BOOK AND WATCH THE WORLD TUMBLE AROUND YOU LIKE I JUST DID! And as I just did.... and have what-could-possibly-happen-next, spooky, tense, white knuckled fun to the very last page. ENJOY!!! )
I gave Mr. Martin 5 stars because as an avid reader of horror, I have come across very few authors lately that have been able to give enough description to actually put the reader right there in the scene with the characters. The atmosphere that the author created was just like any everyday experience that most people have lived through (minus the ghost & goblins, of course) and I was able to picture each mannerism and expression of the people in the story. I also applaud the wonderful editing. Even though there were a few times where the incorrect word was used, I still knew what the author meant. Great job, Mr. Martin! Keep 'em coming!
I wasn't expecting much when I started this book - it was offered as a free promotion, but I was incredibly impressed. The story starts off with a slow burn but intensifies and really pulls you in. It is not a typical "paranormal" story - rather it is one that plants a seed of "what if" and allows it to grow so well that in the end - you believe it is true. I strongly recommend this book and I look forward to reading more from this author. Nicely done.
I am not a super-fan of supernatural and horror books, but this book was well written and, for at least part of it, had me glued to reading. There is a logical flow and the plot line remains fairly true. One of the things I most enjoyed was the moderation with which the author wrote. With many books in this genre, the goal is to go over-the-top with the bizarre and gore, and Jim Martin has managed to do that with this book.

However, we do find many of the same archetypal cliches. The divorced mother, the modest hero with a troubling past, etc. If Martin could have managed to tell the same story, while forging some new ground with character development, the book probably could have received a higher rating.

It's definitely worth the price for a fairly quick and easy read.
A Madman's Song is an excellently written horror tale. The characters are reasonably well developed, the plot is tight and (as far as these things can be) credible and the horror suitably nasty.

Two very positive things that I'd say about the book are that firstly it didn't shy from gore but it managed to avoid being a splatter-fest too. I think the level of violence was pitched just about perfectly and that takes some doing.

Secondly (and what makes this book truly earn its fifth star - the one for 'star quality') is that it used humour to flesh out the characters. So often this is forgotten (particularly in the horror genre) and we're left with what I call the 'Friday the Thirteenth kids' - i.e. cardboard cut-out characters who are only there to be killed off by the resident 'bad guy' as he demonstrates just how 'bad' he really is.

The plot and the denouement are a bit predictable but it's hard to see how this could have been done otherwise. It's a limitation of the supernatural horror genre so ...

What I would say to Jim Martin if he reads my review is that I'd urge him to consider 'writing off' the odd principal character in future books. Good guys don't always survive and, when they die in a story, it really hammers things home to the reader - far more than just words can.

This is a cracking yarn. Excellent.
